Contemporary Foreign Film Classics NEW!
4/6-5/11 (6 weeks)
Tuesdays: 6:00-9:30 pm
Instructor: Reid Schultz
$245/person
Join writer, filmmaker, and academic Reid Schultz on a
6-week journey through some of the greatest foreign language films of the last 25 years. For the past couple of decades, foreign films seem to have waned in their popularity with American audiences who have been unwilling to take chances with a film, cast or topic with which they are unfamiliar. Consequently, many great films have yet to be seen and appreciated. We will examine six of the most exciting, influential and creative contemporary foreign art house films work rediscovering: Carmen (Spain), Wings of Desire (Germany), The Double Life of Veronique (Poland), The Sweet Hereafter (Canada), Central Station (Brazil), and After Life (Japan). You will develop an understanding of how international cinema differs from the American product and how to analyze the language of film and the specific ways filmmakers and writers communicate to audiences. You will begin to appreciate how the use of symbolism, art direction, color, costume design, sound design, cinematography and editing is used to enhance the themes of a film. You will develop an understanding of why these films are considered "Classics"! Withdrawals from this class must be received at least one week prior to the session start date.

Black Comedy Classics NEW!
6/15-7/20 (6 weeks)
Tuesdays: 6:00-9:30 pm
Instructor: Reid Schultz
$245/person
Join Reid Schultz on a six week journey through the edgy, hilariously macabre world of Black comedies. These comedies are characterized by morbid or grimly satiric humor about topics that are usually treated seriously — death, murder, suicide, greed, religion, disease, insanity, drug abuse, terrorism, etc.. These movies alternate between comedy and tragedy and force the viewer to laugh at pain and wickedness, whether it's physical, psychological or existential. Audiences laugh and feel a little ashamed for laughing. This fun, enlightening and educational course contains some provocative material and is intended for audiences who are not too sensitive to adult themes and content. The six films to be screened and discussed are: Charlie Chaplin's Monsieur Verdoux, Arthur Hiller's The Americanization of Emily, Carl Reiner's Where's Poppa, Alan Arkin's Little Murders, Bertrand Blier's Buffet Froid, and Robert Altman's A Wedding. Withdrawals from this class must be received at least one week prior to the session start date.
